Fifty years ago, *Starsky & Hutch* debuted

Fifty years ago, *Starsky & Hutch* debuted, introducing audiences to the iconic detective duo of Sergeant David Starsky and Sergeant Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson, played by Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul. Their genuine chemistry both on and off-screen defined the series and set the standard for the buddy-cop genre.

The dynamic between the impulsive Starsky and the calm Hutch quickly became one of television’s most beloved partnerships. While Glaser continued to build his career behind and in front of the camera, Soul achieved success as a singer, with hits like “Don’t Give Up on Us.” Despite the challenges in their personal lives, including Glaser’s advocacy work for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation after the tragic loss of his wife and daughter, the bond between the two actors remained strong throughout their careers.

The series and their unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on pop culture, particularly with the now-legendary red-and-white Ford Gran Torino that became almost as iconic as the detectives themselves.

Even as Soul faced health issues later in life, including using a wheelchair, and Glaser continued his advocacy work, their enduring friendship served as a testament to the power of connection. Soul’s passing in 2024 was a poignant loss, but his legacy—through both his musical and acting career—remains a significant part of television history. *Starsky & Hutch* will always be remembered for its portrayal of loyalty and brotherhood, both on-screen and in the real-life friendship between its two stars.
